Your Step-by-Step Plan
Choose the situation that matches your records. The steps help you prepare and respond; the agency decides your case.
Reconcile the California Account
Match the year, tax, penalties, interest, and credits to the state return and payment history. Keep IRS payments separate. Identify whether the bill follows a return adjustment or earlier proposed assessment.
Collect Proof for Any Disputed Item
Have the notice, return, relevant tax documents, and payment confirmation ready. For a missing payment, record its date, amount, payment method, tax year, and transaction reference.
Pay, Request a Plan, or Contact FTB
If correct, use FTB Web Pay or another official method. If you cannot pay, review FTB installment options. If you disagree, contact FTB and provide supporting copies through the route requested.
Complete Any Required Follow-Up
Ask what additional information is needed and when to expect review. Keep the contact log and confirmation. An unresolved disagreement should remain on your calendar even if documents have been uploaded.
Check the Posted Outcome
Review the account and later correspondence. If ordinary channels have not resolved an eligible problem, review the FTB Advocate criteria. Contacting an advocate does not replace a timely protest or appeal.
Checkmarks are for your use on this page. They are not sent to an agency or stored as a case record.
