Before You Hire a Tax Relief Company

Check credentials, understand the work, and compare the cost with direct agency options.

01

Promises Are Not Eligibility Decisions

Be cautious when a company promises a dramatic reduction before reviewing your records. Only the tax agency can approve an arrangement. Another customer’s result does not determine yours.

02

Check Who Will Do the Work

Ask for the name and credentials of the person responsible for the case. Verify applicable licensing and representation authority. The IRS directory can help locate preparers with listed credentials and qualifications; not every preparer has the same authority to represent a taxpayer.

03

Get the Scope in Writing

Before paying, request the services, tax agencies and periods covered, total fees, payment schedule, exclusions, cancellation terms, and refund policy. Ask whether return preparation, appeals, and agency representation are included or charged separately.

04

Ask About Direct Options

You can contact the agency, review official payment programs, and apply directly where eligible. A Low Income Taxpayer Clinic may assist qualifying taxpayers with IRS disputes. Professional help should solve a defined problem you understand.

05

Keep Control of Your Records

Keep signed agreements, receipts, submitted forms, and correspondence. Ask for copies of actual filings and agency responses. Do not rely solely on a salesperson’s description of progress.

06

If the Promised Work Was Not Done

Document the problem and request an itemized account of work completed. The FTC accepts reports about tax-relief scams. The IRS provides a complaint route for tax-return-preparer misconduct. Review the relevant agency’s process before submitting personal records.
